Did you know you can graduate truck driving school in as little as four weeks! That means you might only be a month away from the truck-driving job you’ve been dreaming of. Although you’ll learn everything you need to know in order to be a safe and professional driver, there are some things that only come with time. The good news is that when you attend a truck driving school with instructors as experienced as those here at the Phoenix Truck Driving Institute you’ll learn all sorts of tips and tricks that can help you get off to a fast start in your new career. For example, here are some tips that will help with trip planning and time management.

Communicate with Your Dispatcher

After you graduate truck driving school and start driving for a company, you’ll quickly realize who your best friend is—the dispatcher. Providing accurate information to your dispatcher and staying in constant contact will make sure that you are provided with the most up-to-date information regarding load size, pickup/delivery time, destination, etc. This can save you a lot of time and frustration in the long run, and your dispatcher might eventually start rewarding you with better routes.

Arrive Early

If you’re supposed to pick up or drop off a load at noon and you arrive an hour or two early, check with the customer first before you find a parking lot to rest in or a place to grab a bite and kill time. Although you might be told to come back at the scheduled time, in some cases you may be allowed to drop off or pick up the delivery early, which can obviously save you a lot of time and help you get home sooner.

Perform a Thorough Pre- and Post-Trip Inspection

You’ll learn more about this in truck driving school, but it’s important that you perform a thorough inspection of your truck before and after a trip. It only takes a few minutes to inspect your vehicle, but it can help you avoid a breakdown or safety issue on the road that could result in lengthy delays.
