The first step in becoming a truck driver is earning your Commercial Driver’s License, or CDL. Earning your CDL means passing a multi-part test administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation to prove you understand the rules and techniques behind handling a truck. At CDL school, you will learn everything you need to know about driving a truck safely and effectively, as well as the road rules and other information you’ll need to pass your CDL exam.
When you are ready to receive your CDL, you must fill out an application and have the completed form with you when you arrive to take your test. You must also present your Social Security card with your application to qualify for testing. The CDL application requires basic information, such as your name, Social Security number, address, and current driver’s license information. You will also need to state which class of CDL you wish to receive.
Proof of Identity and Residency
You must present proof of your identity, age, and presence in the United States at the time of your CDL test. Applicants must also prove that Arizona is their current state of domicile. You’ll need two acceptable documents as proof so long as one includes a photo ID; alternatively, you must have three acceptable documents if none includes a photo ID.
Once you have presented your application and documentation, you will be allowed to take the CDL test. This test includes knowledge and performance portions to ensure you have full knowledge of the regulations and skills required to drive a truck. You must pass 80% of the knowledge test and the skills test must be successfully performed in the class of truck you intend to drive.
After you pass your CDL test, you will receive your CDL and can begin working as a truck driver. If you’d like to find out more about earning your CDL in Phoenix, call Phoenix Truck Driving Institute at (877) 205-5372 or click through our website to read about our truck driving programs.
