Earning your CDL through training is the first step in obtaining a job in the trucking industry. Once you are ready to seek your first commercial trucking job, there are a few important factors to consider when looking for the right fit.

Ask About Pay Rate and Mileage

One of the first things you should know before taking any trucking job is the pay rate and how it is calculated. Most trucking companies pay drivers by the mile, with increasing pay for increasing experience. However, it’s also important to determine whether you will be paid for the actual miles you drive, or simply for the shortest, most direct distance between your pickup and drop-off locations. Once you know how each prospective company will pay you, you can make a more informed decision regarding the employer you prefer.

Ask About Home Time

Home time can be a significant factor for truckers with spouses or families. While trucking statutes require you to take time off between consecutive days of work, this time off can vary and with it, your home time. Talk to potential employers about their home time policies to find an company that best suits your needs.Truckers with families may want to opt for a company that offers shorter local routes, while those without significant time commitments at home may be happier as long-haul truckers that regularly make cross-country drives and may have variable home time schedules.
